Cambodia Urges Ceasefire as Border Clashes With Thailand Escalate
……………………
Cambodia has called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with Thailand following deadly border clashes that have left at least 32 people dead and displaced nearly 200,000. Cambodia’s ambassador to the UN, Chhea Keo, emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution, while Thailand’s foreign minister Maris Sangiampongsa said meaningful ceasefire talks require “genuine sincerity” from Cambodia.
The violence, now in its third day, has spread to multiple locations along the border, with reports of heavy weapon use. Thailand has declared martial law in eight districts bordering Cambodia. Thai officials reported 19 deaths, including 13 civilians, and the evacuation of approximately 140,000 people. Cambodia has reported 13 fatalities and over 35,000 displaced.
Accusations have been exchanged, with Thailand blaming Cambodia for launching drone surveillance and initiating attacks, while Cambodia claims Thai forces violated a prior agreement by approaching a disputed temple. Cambodia also accused Thailand of using cluster munitions—allegations not yet addressed by Thai authorities.
International leaders, including Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the United States, have urged both sides to halt hostilities. However, Thailand insists external mediation is unnecessary. The conflict stems from a long-standing border dispute dating back to colonial-era boundary demarcations.
