Migrant deaths in Asia reach record high in 2024, UN data reveals

In 2024, migrant deaths in Asia reached a record high, with at least 2,514 fatalities reported, a 59% increase from 2023, according to the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The surge is primarily linked to vulnerable populations, particularly the Rohingya fleeing Myanmar and Afghans escaping conflict, with 1,517 Afghan deaths and 889 Rohingya deaths recorded. Many migrants face perilous conditions, including overcrowded boats and abuse by smugglers.

Over 1,000 of the deceased were unidentified, highlighting the lack of data on missing migrants. Complex migration factors, including economic inequality and climate change, exacerbate the dangers on routes like the Bay of Bengal and overland paths through South and Southeast Asia.
