Explosive Devices Thrown Near New York Mayor’s Residence During Anti-Islam Protest

Tensions escalated outside the residence of Zohran Mamdani in New York City after a far-right protest against Islam led to clashes with counter-demonstrators and the throwing of improvised explosive devices near Gracie Mansion.

The protest was organized by right-wing activist Jake Lang, who called on supporters to rally against what he described as the “Islamic takeover” of the city. The demonstration took place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, drawing about 20 protesters, while more than 100 counter-protesters gathered nearby to oppose the rally.

According to authorities, tensions between the two groups escalated into confrontations, with some physical scuffles reported. During the unrest, at least one improvised explosive device was thrown toward the protest area. Investigators said the device contained screws, bolts and a fuse and could have caused serious injuries if it had detonated.

Police later arrested two suspects in connection with the incident, identified as Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19. Federal authorities are investigating whether the attack was inspired by extremist propaganda, with the case being handled alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Mayor Mamdani condemned the violence following the incident, describing both the anti-Muslim protest and the attempted attack as unacceptable. No injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.
