Trump Announces Increase in Global Tariffs to 15% Following Supreme Court Ruling

Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he is raising global tariffs from 10% to 15%, escalating a key element of his economic agenda after a setback in the courts.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the decision followed a review of a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States, which overturned broad tariffs imposed under emergency powers. He described the ruling as poorly reasoned and harmful to U.S. interests, and said the new 15% rate represents the maximum level allowed by law.

Trump stated that his administration would determine additional legally permitted tariffs in the coming months, framing the policy as part of efforts to protect U.S. national security and address what he described as decades of unfair treatment of the United States by trading partners.

On Friday, the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s sweeping tariffs in a 6–3 decision, ruling that the U.S. Constitution clearly grants Congress, not the executive branch, the authority to impose taxes and tariffs. The court did not address whether companies could reclaim tariffs already paid.

The decision marked a significant legal challenge to Trump’s trade policy, even as he signaled plans to pursue alternative measures.
