At least 13 people were killed when an Interoceanic Train derailed in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, authorities said on Sunday, Reuters reported. The accident occurred near the town of Nizanda and involved a passenger train carrying about 250 people, including crew members.
The Mexican Navy said 139 passengers were uninjured, while 98 others sustained injuries, with several in serious condition and receiving medical care. President Claudia Sheinbaum said emergency teams and senior officials were deployed to support rescue efforts and assist the families of victims. State officials in Oaxaca expressed condolences and said coordination with federal agencies was underway.
Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the derailment. The Interoceanic Train is part of a major infrastructure project linking ports on the Pacific and Gulf coasts, aimed at boosting trade and economic development in southern Mexico.
