A new study published by Stanford University Press suggests that the presence of Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah on the Liverpool team has led to a significant decrease in Islamophobia in the Merseyside region of Britain, Shia Waves Persian reported citing a study by Stanford University’s Immigration Policy Lab.
According to the research, hate crimes against Muslims in the area have dropped by approximately 19% since 2017, the year Salah joined the team. Over the same period, the rate of other crimes in the region remained unchanged. The study also analyzed 15 million tweets and found that anti-Islamic content among Liverpool fans decreased from 7.2% to 3.4%.
Researchers attribute this positive change to Salah’s successful image, which has presented a humane and empathetic face of Islam through his athletic performance and social conduct. The study concludes that popular public figures can play a crucial role in reducing religious prejudice and promoting peaceful coexistence.
