California’s largest coastal cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Alameda, are facing a growing threat from rising sea levels, according to a report by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS).

San Diego is seeing the fastest rise, with sea levels increasing by 2.6mm annually. By 2050, researchers warn of severe flooding risks in key urban and economic areas.

The Public Policy Institute of California estimates $18 billion in infrastructure is at risk. In the Bay Area alone, VIMS suggests $110 billion may be needed for adequate coastal protection.
