UN Chief Says Unfair International System Limits Africa’s Potential, Calls for Reform

United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres has warned that the current international system is unfair and has hindered Africa from fully realizing its extensive economic, political and social potential.
In a statement posted on social media on Monday, Guterres said that African countries have long lacked equitable access to global resources, effective participation in decision‑making and proportional voice in international affairs. “Africa’s enormous potential is being constrained by an unfair international system. That must change,” he wrote, emphasizing the need for reforms that would ensure African nations are appropriately represented and heard in global governance structures.
Guterres’s remarks come amid broader discussions this week among African leaders and international partners about reforming global financial and political systems to address long‑standing imbalances. At a summit in Nairobi yesterday, African officials, joined by the UN chief and international partners, urged changes to the global credit and investment architecture to improve access to financing and equity in international markets—a step they said would help unlock African development potential.
