Deadly Roads Threaten Lives and Trade Across Africa’s Sahel Region
………………….

Road travel in Africa’s Sahel region has become increasingly perilous amid persistent jihadist violence, with armed groups targeting key routes to disrupt trade and spread fear. A recent OECD report found that 70% of violent incidents in North and West Africa occur within one kilometer of a road. Routes in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have become epicenters of attacks, kidnappings, and ambushes.

Mali’s National Route 16 is considered the region’s most dangerous road, while Burkina Faso’s National Route 22 has earned the name “death corridor” due to frequent attacks and blockades. In Niger, roads near the border with Burkina Faso have seen dozens of truck drivers killed and vehicles burned. Drivers’ unions report being barred from markets and targeted for kidnappings.

Experts warn that tackling road insecurity requires improved infrastructure, regional cooperation, and better-equipped security forces. Some suggest adapting tactics by using light vehicles like motorcycles to counter insurgent mobility, aiming to reclaim these vital routes from armed groups.
