Zambia: UN officials evaluate worst drought in two decades

Two senior U.N. officials have completed their assessment of Zambia’s severe drought, which has affected 8 million people and put 6 million at risk of food insecurity, VOA reported yesterday.

The U.N. representatives have emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid and food assistance for affected communities, urging international solidarity to support the response.

The drought has destroyed a significant portion of the country’s maize cultivation, impacting food supply, as the population is concurrently struggling with COVID and cholera.

UNICEF has warned of the vulnerability of 3 million children to the crisis, especially those under 5, along with the impact on mothers and pregnant women.
