A small group of 20 people, some of whom are still in college, came up with the idea of inaugurating the New York Halal Food Festival on Long Island.
Noran Omar, the creative media director of the event, said all of the organizers have immigrant parents and wanted to foster a sense of community among Muslims and other groups.
There will be about 50 vendors and special events are scheduled throughout the day, like eating contests and cooking demonstrations, according to The New York Times.
The Festival is slated for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and admission is free.
Events like these help bring together the Muslim community and introduce peaceful coexistence with the Americans.
