France has banned three Sunni Islamic associations that ran a mosque in the Paris area that was shut down following November’s terrorist attacks on the capital, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.
The Mosque at Lagny-sur-Marne was closed in early December as part of a huge security crackdown after 130 people were killed in a coordinated series of shootings and suicide bombings in Paris on Nov. 13. The so-called Islamic State group claimed the attacks.
The government’s spokesman Stephane Le Foll said after a cabinet meeting: “The fight against preachers of hate will be total.”
He added that the three banned groups “were clearly taking action to incite extremism.”
It’s noteworthy that the main group is called “Retour aux Sources,” which roughly translates as “Back to our roots.”
