Global Armed Conflicts Reach Record Level Since World War II

Global armed conflict reached its highest recorded level since World War II in 2025, according to conflict data cited in international reports.

The Uppsala Conflict Data Program recorded 65 armed conflicts during the year, the highest number since its records began in 1946. The number of interstate conflicts also rose sharply, reaching eight, including wars and confrontations involving Russia and Ukraine, Iran and Israel, India and Pakistan, and Israel and Syria.

The report said around 244,600 people were killed in organized violence in 2025, making it one of the deadliest years since the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Thirteen conflicts were classified as wars, meaning each caused at least 1,000 battle-related deaths in a calendar year.

Researchers also warned of a sharp rise in violence against civilians. Deaths from one-sided violence reached about 76,500, more than four times the previous year’s figure, with Sudan — particularly the violence around El Fasher — cited as a major factor.

Analysts said the figures reflect a dangerous rise in interstate tensions, weakening international cooperation, and the failure of global institutions to contain escalating conflicts and protect civilians.
