US Campuses Erupt in Pro-Palestine Protests, Leading to Arrests and Clashes
Dozens of students were arrested Wednesday across US campuses, with police clashes and political tension.
The arrests come amid a wave of demonstrations at campuses across the US, which began last week after students at New York’s Columbia University set up encampments calling for the university to divest from weapons manufacturers with ties to Israel. The protests have led to mass suspensions and arrests of hundreds students in New York and other cities.
Additionally, at the University of Texas at Austin, a clash between hundreds of police and protesters resulted in at least 34 arrests, including a journalist. Similar scenes unfolded at the University of Southern California, where police detained over 50 demonstrators.
The unrest highlights the deep emotions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, even on American soil.
