UN Launches New Methodology to Combat Online Hate Speech

On October 5, the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect introduced a new methodology aimed at monitoring social media platforms to combat online hate speech, Jurist News reported yesterday.

Supported by the UK Permanent Mission to the UN, the initiative seeks to standardize monitoring processes while adhering to international human rights standards.

Titled “A Comprehensive Methodology for Monitoring Social Media to Address and Counter Online Hate Speech,” the framework outlines a three-step approach: real-time data collection, content classification, and analysis of trends. This initiative builds on previous efforts, including a 2023 guide for policymakers.

Special Adviser Alice Wairimu Nderitu emphasized the importance of this methodology in tackling hate speech, which can incite violence and lead to atrocities. A thematic panel of experts highlighted the need for context-specific monitoring and partnerships to protect vulnerable groups. The UN’s ongoing commitment to addressing hate speech aims to safeguard human dignity and promote fundamental rights.
