Launch of Three-Year “Millennium of the Najaf Seminary” Project Begins at Imam Ali Holy Shrine

The Holy Alawi Shrine in Najaf has launched the international project “Millennium of the Najaf Seminary” with a ceremony held in the vicinity of the shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), marking one thousand years of the scholarly legacy of the Najaf Hawza.

The project aims to document and highlight the historical, intellectual and cultural contributions of the Najaf Seminary, including its role in the development of Islamic scholarship and the preservation of religious sciences since the arrival of Sheikh al-Tusi in Najaf and the establishment of its scholarly tradition.

According to organizers, the initiative will continue for more than three years and will include academic conferences, research programs, cultural events, documentation projects and collaborations involving religious and academic institutions.

The opening ceremony was attended by scholars of the Najaf Seminary, religious authorities, representatives of Iraqi holy shrines, government officials, university leaders and academic figures from Iraq and abroad, including participants from Iran, Lebanon and Pakistan.

The organizers said extensive media coverage has been prepared through the Holy Alawi Shrine’s media platforms and participating news organizations to present the history and heritage of the Najaf Seminary to a wider audience.

The Najaf Seminary is considered one of the oldest centers of Islamic scholarship, with a continuous scholarly tradition spanning approximately a millennium.
