Global Outrage Over China’s DeepSeek AI for Uyghur Censorship
China’s DeepSeek AI platform is facing severe backlash for its alleged role in promoting state propaganda and censoring sensitive topics, particularly concerning the Uyghur community. Human rights activists and international experts, including the Campaign for Uyghur, have condemned the platform for aggressively collecting personal data, such as IP addresses and conversation histories, raising concerns about potential abuses by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Rushan Abbas, Executive Director of the Campaign for Uyghurs, stated that DeepSeek’s data collection benefits a regime known for human rights violations. Digital law expert Jan Czarnocki shared his experience, noting that DeepSeek refused to acknowledge China’s actions in Xinjiang as genocide, labeling its responses as scripted propaganda.
Critics argue that tools like DeepSeek threaten free speech and privacy, urging the international community to take a stand against such repression. The growing concern highlights the ethical implications of AI technologies in authoritarian regimes.
