The religious seminary in Najaf announced the passing of Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq Al-Fayyad, who passed away at a hospital in Baghdad at the age of 96 following a recent illness.

Born in 1930 in Kabul, Afghanistan, Sheikh Al-Fayyad moved at a young age to Najaf al-Ashraf to pursue his religious studies. He rose through the ranks of the seminary to become one of its leading scholars and was recognized as a prominent student of the late Grand Ayatollah Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei. He emerged as one of the most influential teachers and maraji‘ (sources of emulation) for millions of Muslims worldwide.

In a statement, his office mourned the loss of “a great religious authority who dedicated his blessed life to serving Islam, teaching Islamic sciences, nurturing scholars, and disseminating the knowledge of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) while clarifying the rulings of Sharia.”

Sheikh Al-Fayyad had been admitted to hospital days earlier for intensive medical care before his death was announced, triggering widespread mourning across religious and academic circles in Iraq and the broader Islamic world.
