Kufa Mosque begins commemoration of Muslim ibn Aqil’s martyrdom with mourning rituals
The Grand Mosque of Kufa has raised black flags over its domes, marking the start of mourning ceremonies to commemorate the martyrdom of Muslim ibn Aqil (peace be upon him), the revered envoy of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). The martyrdom anniversary is marked on the 9th of the holy month of Dhu’l-Qida.
According to Shia Waves correspondent in Holy Najaf, large numbers of mourners have gathered at the mosque to express their sorrow and loyalty in remembrance of this tragic event—one of the most significant in the lead-up to the Ashura commemorations.
Mosque officials stated that the mourning program includes daily Majalis (religious gatherings), the ceremonial raising of black banners over the shrine, and the preparation of hospitality services for pilgrims and processions arriving from across Iraq and abroad.
Participants highlighted that honoring the sacrifice of Muslim ibn Aqil is a tribute to his unwavering loyalty and courage in the face of betrayal. His martyrdom in Kufa left a profound impact on Imam Hussain, peace be upon him, and continues to resonate deeply within the hearts of believers.
