The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reported that two of their fighters were killed in a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) attack in eastern Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province on Wednesday, Rudaw reported. According to the SDF, two ISIS militants on a motorcycle fired machine guns at an SDF military vehicle in the town of al-Bahra, resulting in the deaths of the fighters. The SDF described the attack as part of ISIS’s ongoing efforts to destabilize security in areas liberated from the group.

ISIS, which seized large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014 and declared a “caliphate,” was defeated in Syria by the SDF in 2019 with support from the US-led coalition. The SDF continues operations against ISIS remnants amid a resurgence in activity.

On the same day, the SDF captured a senior ISIS operative in Hasaka city during a coalition-backed operation. Additionally, at least one member of the Kurdish-led Asayish internal security forces was injured in two separate suspected ISIS attacks in Deir ez-Zor.
