AFC Postpones 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia to December Amid Regional Security Concerns

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the postponement of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, moving the tournament to December 2027 and January 2028 amid regional security concerns and logistical challenges.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the AFC said the tournament’s organizing committee had approved the revised schedule in response to exceptional circumstances affecting preparations, international travel and the movement of participating teams and supporters. The competition, originally scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027, will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028. The revised dates are subject to approval by FIFA.

The decision followed consultations with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the local organizing committee to ensure suitable conditions for participating teams, officials and spectators. Regional security tensions, particularly those linked to the repercussions of the US-Iran war and reported Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, have raised concerns over travel arrangements, air traffic and the security of major sporting events.

The AFC stated that continued uncertainty had created significant obstacles to holding the championship according to its original timetable. It also praised Saudi Arabia’s commitment to hosting a successful tournament and confirmed that coordination would continue with national football associations, sponsors, broadcasters and commercial partners to minimize the impact of the postponement.

The Asian Cup is one of the continent’s major international football competitions, bringing together national teams from across Asia.
