Saudi Arabia Faces Economic, Social Challenges Amid Rising Living Costs and Criticism from Dissidents

Saudi Arabia, despite its vast oil wealth and ambitious development initiatives, continues to face significant economic and social challenges, according to critics and independent analyses.
In recent years, the kingdom has pursued major reforms aimed at diversifying its economy through projects linked to Vision 2030, a national strategy designed to reduce dependence on oil and expand investment in other sectors. However, some observers argue that many citizens still experience economic pressure in their daily lives.
Rising living costs, declining wages in certain sectors, and growing economic inequality have placed financial strain on parts of the population, according to critics. Some university graduates and highly educated individuals reportedly struggle to find suitable employment and have turned to lower-income jobs, including small service work and informal businesses.
During a program titled “Shwalim” on the YouTube channel “Yaqzah,” Saudi dissident Saleh Hamamah claimed that official statistics on unemployment and inflation do not fully reflect the economic realities faced by ordinary citizens. He also accused ruling elites of economic corruption and criticized the 15 percent value-added tax imposed in recent years, arguing that it disproportionately affects lower-income groups.
Reports by some independent research centers have also suggested that wealth concentration and disputed economic indicators may contribute to widening social gaps within Saudi society.
While Saudi authorities continue to promote economic modernization and attract foreign investment as part of their reform agenda, critics say living pressures remain a major concern for many residents. As a result, economic management and social policy have increasingly become subjects of debate among activists and opposition voices discussing the kingdom’s future development path.
