A Muslim English professor at Shri Varshney College faced a near-mob lynching on campus after being accused of sending inappropriate messages to students and involvement in ‘love jihad,’ a communal allegation, the Clarion reported. The incident sparked protests led by ABVP activists demanding his suspension.
The college principal, Brijesh Kumar, emphasized no formal complaints had been lodged before the protest and called for a fair investigation before any action. Police confirmed receipt of a complaint from an ex-student and are investigating, having seized the professor’s phone and laptop. CCTV footage of the attack is also under review.
Muslim community leaders condemned the allegations as baseless and communal, warning of growing tensions on campuses. Human rights activists stressed the importance of due process and cautioned against politicizing the issue.
The college administration pledged cooperation with police and urged calm, underscoring that suspension or punishment should follow evidence-based inquiry to ensure justice and protect minority rights amid rising communal sensitivities in educational institutions.
