Pakistan’s Imran Khan Proposes Conditional Talks with Military Amid Ongoing Legal Battles
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently imprisoned, has expressed his party’s willingness to engage in “conditional negotiations” with Pakistan’s military, appointing Mahmood Khan Achakzai as his representative, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.
Khan’s conditions include holding “clean and transparent” elections and dropping what he deems “bogus” charges against his supporters.
His offer comes amid accusations from the ruling government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who criticized Khan for “pleading” with the military and called his proposal a “conspiracy against the country.”
Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party recently secured additional parliamentary seats, has faced multiple legal challenges that he claims are politically motivated. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan condemned attempts to ban PTI, labeling it a significant threat to democratic norms. Meanwhile, a UN panel stated that Khan’s detention lacks legal justification and appears aimed at preventing his political participation.
