Over 200,000 Displaced in Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict

The ongoing conflict in Lebanon has resulted in the displacement of over 200,000 individuals due to Israeli airstrikes, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi. He reported that more than 50,000 Lebanese and Syrians residing in Lebanon have crossed into Syria to escape the violence.

Relief operations are currently underway, with the UNHCR coordinating efforts to assist those in need. The situation has intensified following a series of cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israel, which have escalated since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7. Israeli airstrikes have targeted Hezbollah leaders, including the recent killing of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

As the bombardment continues, many families have fled their homes in southern Beirut, seeking refuge in public spaces, schools, and makeshift shelters. Reports indicate that hundreds are sleeping outdoors, with some families unable to find adequate shelter. The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has noted that humanitarian capacities are severely overstretched, with many displaced individuals lacking essential aid.

In response to the crisis, the World Food Programme has launched an emergency operation aimed at providing food assistance to up to one million affected people. Efforts are being made to distribute food rations and hot meals to those in shelters across Lebanon.
