The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held a meeting entitled “Our Marshes are Our Life”, to support the Chabayish marshes in Dhi Qar province.
FAO and the European Union have drawn up plans to support the Chabayish marshes.
A statement by the organization, received by Shia Waves News Agency, said that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held a meeting entitled “Our Marshes Our Life”, in the Chabayish marshes in Dhi Qar with representatives of local governments from the provinces of Basra, Dhi Qar and Maysan and official representatives of the ministries of agriculture, water resources, environment, health, and the farmers’ union to discuss the water crisis in the Iraqi marshes and ways to move forward to help farmers and buffalo breeders.
It added that the organization, through the support of the European Union, is working closely with local authorities to support the most affected people in southern Iraq from water scarcity, and discussions focused on the impact of water scarcity on buffalo breeders and fishermen, the impact of climate change that threatens their lives and livelihoods, and general biodiversity in the Iraqi marshes.
It noted that short, medium and long-term plans have been drawn up to deal with these challenges.
