A conference was held at the historic Palace of Westminster, home to the House of Lords, to mark the centenary of the destruction of the Jannat al-Baqi cemetery.
The event, attended by religious leaders, politicians, and civil society activists from diverse faith backgrounds, was organized by the Baqi Organization and the Al-Khoei Foundation. Participants included Muslim and Christian scholars and public figures.
Speakers highlighted the historical and spiritual significance of the cemetery, describing it as an important religious heritage site for nearly two billion Muslims worldwide. They stressed the need to preserve and protect sacred sites from neglect or damage.
Discussions also covered the historical circumstances surrounding the cemetery’s destruction a century ago, as well as ongoing efforts to restore and preserve its legacy. Participants called for stronger interfaith dialogue and social solidarity as key elements in safeguarding religious heritage.
The conference further emphasized the use of legal and political avenues to support the cause, including calls to allow women to visit the cemetery. Attendees said protecting sacred sites is a shared humanitarian and religious responsibility requiring broader international cooperation.
