Iraqi Army Kills Over 100 ISIS Members in 2024
The Iraqi army has reported the killing of over 100 ISIS members since the start of 2024, highlighting significant progress in the fight against terrorism, Rudaw reported today.
Major General Tahseen al-Khafaji, spokesperson for Iraq’s Joint Operations Command, described the operations as “great and wonderful,” attributing improved efficiency to enhanced cooperation among security agencies.
Despite being declared territorially defeated in 2017, ISIS continues to conduct attacks across Iraq, particularly in disputed regions like Kirkuk, Salahaddin, Nineveh, and Diyala. Recent Iraqi airstrikes targeted a tunnel in western Nineveh after militants engaged an army battalion.
In related news, Iraq has seen a dramatic 210% increase in drug seizures and over 5,500 Lebanese refugees have entered the country. The U.S. and Iraq have also agreed to conclude the military mission of the anti-ISIS coalition within a year, though American troops will remain until 2026 to support operations in Syria.
