First Islamic Primary School Opens in Woerden Amid New Academic Year
……………
Woerden, Utrecht province, has opened its first Islamic primary school, Sirat School, in the former De Wegwijzer school building on Essenlaan Street. The school began operating at the start of the 2025-2026 academic year, initially offering education for grades one through four to maintain teaching quality and avoid overburdening older students.
Principal Malik Arbag stated that the school aims to integrate the Dutch national curriculum with Islamic religious education, creating a balanced environment similar to Catholic and Protestant schools that include weekly religious lessons. Addressing integration concerns, Arbag emphasized the school’s mission to prepare students as active Dutch citizens while nurturing their cultural and religious identity.
With support from the Woerden municipality, the school is set to enroll 70 to 80 students, including children turning four during the academic year. Fully equipped with modern facilities, Sirat School strives to meet Dutch educational standards and enrich the country’s diverse educational offerings.
