Iran Elects Reformist Candidate Massoud Pezeshkian as New President
Iran has chosen Massoud Pezeshkian, a reformist candidate, as its new president. Pezeshkian defeated his conservative rival Saeed Jalili, securing 53.3% of the more than 30 million votes counted.
The election came after no candidate secured a majority in the first round on June 28th, which saw a historically low voter turnout of just 40%.
This run-off vote was called following the death of Iran’s previous president, Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash in May along with seven others.
