Trial of Prominent Shia Scholars Begins at Bahrain’s High Criminal Court
————————–
Bahrain has begun the trial of a group of prominent Shia scholars after their cases were referred to the country’s High Criminal Court.
The proceedings include clerics who are currently held in Bahraini prisons, as well as others living outside the country.
According to Lebanon’s Al-Ahed news agency, the first session of the trials began on Sunday. Critics have described the proceedings as sectarian in nature.
The trials come amid what rights advocates and opposition figures describe as increasing political and religious pressure on Bahrain’s Shia community.
