Catalan Parliament Warns of Continued Violence, Discrimination Against Hazaras in Afghanistan
——————————————–
The Parliament of Catalonia in Spain has issued a formal statement expressing serious concern about the situation of the Hazara ethnic community in Afghanistan under Taliban control. The statement condemns ongoing discrimination and systematic violence against Hazaras, describing their historical experience of exclusion, repression, and ethnic‑based attacks.
According to the parliament, the humanitarian, economic, and institutional situation in Afghanistan has significantly deteriorated since the Taliban takeover in 2021, exacerbating threats to ethnic and religious minorities. The statement highlights that Hazaras have faced intensified violence in recent decades, including suicide bombings, mass killings, and assaults on community institutions, and notes that such acts may meet international legal definitions of genocide and crimes against humanity.
The Catalan legislature urged the European Union, the United Nations, and other international bodies to support independent investigations, strengthen accountability mechanisms, and enhance protection for Hazara civilians and asylum seekers.
