Four displaced children have died from severe cold in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, UNICEF said on Wednesday, Khaama Press reported. The agency confirmed that the children were living in the Zari Baba displacement camp in Nurgal district, where families affected by recent earthquakes are struggling to cope with freezing temperatures.

UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, Tajudeen Oyewale, said the children died from cold-related illnesses that could have been prevented with proper shelter, medical support, and winter supplies. He called for urgent action from humanitarian organizations and international donors to accelerate the delivery of winter assistance before more lives are lost.

The agency stressed that essential aid—including blankets, warm clothing, heating materials, and medical care—is urgently needed to protect vulnerable families. UNICEF previously warned that more than 270,000 children in Afghanistan’s northern and eastern regions, already impacted by the earthquakes, are now at heightened risk as winter intensifies.

Humanitarian groups say limited funding and access constraints continue to hamper relief operations. Aid organizations warn that unless support reaches remote and affected areas quickly, additional preventable deaths may occur in the weeks ahead.
