Amid increasing restrictions on women, Afghanistan has inaugurated its first women-focused radio station in the western city of Herat, operated entirely by female journalists. The new station, Nawai Zan — meaning “Voice of Woman” — aims to amplify women’s perspectives and address issues affecting them in Afghan society.

According to Tolo News, more than ten female journalists produce diverse programs highlighting women’s achievements, challenges, and daily experiences. Station director Shabnam Karimi said Nawai Zan seeks to provide a platform for women to express their opinions freely and responsibly. She added that the team is committed to showcasing stories of women’s resilience and success despite societal barriers.

Staff member Saadi Niyar Yazdanparast noted that the programs will help convey women’s voices to policymakers, describing Nawai Zan as the only media outlet in western Afghanistan dedicated solely to women’s issues.

The launch comes as authorities in Herat reportedly tighten restrictions on women, including orders barring them from entering government buildings without wearing the burqa and prohibiting taxi drivers from transporting uncovered women. Observers see the station’s establishment as a bold effort to preserve women’s presence in Afghan media and ensure their voices continue to be heard.
