At least 76 people, including 17 children, were killed in a devastating bus crash in western Afghanistan, a tragedy described as one of the country’s deadliest traffic incidents in recent years, Khaama Press reported. The passenger bus was carrying Afghan migrants who had recently been deported from Iran.

The accident occurred on Tuesday night in the Guzara district of Herat province, on the highway connecting Herat to the border town of Islam Qala. According to provincial police, the bus, which was reportedly traveling at excessive speed, collided with a truck carrying fuel and a motorcycle, causing a massive fire that engulfed all three vehicles.

The high number of casualties is a stark reminder of the risks faced by thousands of Afghans returning from Iran, a process that has accelerated in recent months. Authorities are investigating the crash, and the victims’ bodies, many burned beyond recognition, have been taken to a military hospital.
