UN Reports 6.6 Million Afghans in Need of Shelter
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that approximately 6.6 million people in Afghanistan are in urgent need of shelter, Khaama Press reported yesterday.
This alarming figure was revealed in a statement published on Sunday, December 8, highlighting the impact of natural disasters, including floods and earthquakes, compounded by widespread poverty and unemployment.
The UNHCR has identified providing adequate shelter as a top priority, requesting $21.9 million in aid to address this critical situation. Recent events, such as the October 2022 earthquake in Herat and subsequent floods, have resulted in the destruction of over 66,000 homes across the country.
As winter approaches, the need for immediate assistance is more pressing than ever. The UNHCR is committed to offering urgent support, which includes long-term shelter solutions, emergency repairs, and the provision of non-food items to ensure vulnerable families can access dignified living conditions.
International humanitarian organizations have raised concerns about the escalating needs in Afghanistan, anticipating significant challenges in the coming months as they strive to assist those affected by ongoing disasters.
