Afghan Shia protesters march in response to Taliban Muharram restrictions
In the western Afghan city of Herat, groups of Shia protesters have taken to the streets to voice their dissent against recent statements made by the Taliban regarding the observance of Ashura, Khaama Press reported yesterday.
Caravan-like processions of protesters marched through the 12th, 9th, and 13th districts of Herat, waving flags associated with Ashura and chanting “Labbaik Ya Hussain” as an expression of their religious devotion.
This protest movement was sparked by comments from Ahmadullah Muttaqi, the Taliban’s cultural chief, who had deemed Ashura ceremonies as “bid’ah” or religious innovation.
Earlier, Muttaqi, who serves as the Taliban’s head of information and culture, had emphasized the need to combat “political and foreign innovation-bid’ahs” during a meeting with local officials and Shia representatives.
The protesters in Herat expressed their “disgust” towards Muttaqi’s remarks through the midnight protests held on July 11th.
The Taliban’s crackdown on Ashura symbols, including the removal of mourning flags from Shia-populated areas, has further escalated tensions in the city. Residents fear potential clashes between civilians and Taliban forces due to the group’s interference in religious observances.
