Free Muslim calls for the enactment of laws that criminalize committing crimes against journalists
The International Nonviolence Organization, Free Muslim, called on the international community to enact laws that criminalize committing crimes against journalists.
In a statement received by Shiawaves, the organization said, “The international community commemorates on the second of November of every year the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, due to the increasing crime rates against this social segment.”
It added, “documented international reports and statistics confirm that during the past fourteen years (2006-2019), nearly 1,200 journalists were killed while performing their media duties and conveying information to the general public.
He explained that nine out of ten cases, killers get away with impunity, and this impunity leads to more deaths. This does not include the journalists who are subjected to daily attacks, including torture, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, intimidation and harassment. In addition, women journalists face specific risks including sexual assault.
The organization called on the international community, and specifically the International Council for Human Rights, to activate laws that criminalize individuals and institutions alike that are involved in or contribute to crimes against journalists.
