The MoD said Afghan forces carried out an operation in Nangarhar province in order to eliminate Gul Mohammad Sangari, the Taliban military chief, and his hideout.
According to the MoD’s statement Sangari, along with two other fighters, was targeted in the Swati area of Surkh Road district of the province while trying to flee the area.
The ministry statement said that Sangari was directly involved in suicide attacks and other terrorist attacks in the province.
No further details were provided and the Taliban has not yet commented.
