Shia Muslims commemorate Tasua – the ninth day of Muharram

Shia Muslims in Iraq and many other countries have commemorated Tasua, the ninth day of the lunar month of Muharram.


Tasua services in Iraq are held a day before the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him and his progeny.

Millions of Shia pilgrims flocked to Iraq’s holy city of Karbala during the past few days, ahead of commemorations marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.

Millions of black-clad mourners have been holding ceremonies across Iraq, Pakistan, Azerbaijan Republic, Iran and Lebanon. Mourning processions also held in Europe, America and Africa.
