Saudi Arabia is still believed to be seeking nuclear weapons technology in a bid to counter any threat posed by neighboring countries’ nuclear program, which continues to operate in an advanced manner despite the landmark nuclear agreement, according to a new report by a proliferation monitoring organization that labeled the Kingdom a nuclear “newcomer.”

Tensions in the Middle East have only increased since the nuclear deal was signed, leading the Saudis to pursue nuclear capabilities, according to the Institute for Science and International Security, a Washington D.C.-based organization that monitors global proliferation issues.

Saudi Arabia also tries to buy nuclear capabilities from Saudi-friendly countries such as Pakistan, and it seems as if the allied countries are managing mutual meetings to get such a deal done.

Saudi efforts to pursue nuclear weapons technology is likely to increase in the coming years as the nuclear deal approaches its sunset, according to the report.
