25th of Rabi Marks Anniversary of Truce Agreement between Imam Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) and Muawiya
————————————
On the 25th of Rabi’ al-Awwal in 41 AH, Imam Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) concluded a historic truce with Muawiya ibn Abu Sufyan (may the eternal Divine curse be upon them both) to end the civil war among Muslims for the welfare of the community.
The terms of the agreement were designed to protect the rights and lives of Muslims, particularly the Shi’a. Muawiya pledged not to insult Imam Ali (peace be upon him), to respect the lives of Shi’a, and to safeguard their rights. The treaty also stipulated the distribution of one million dirhams among the orphans of the battles of Jamal and Siffin, and that Muawiya would not appoint a successor or assume unilateral control after Imam Hasan’s death.
Imam Hasan (peace be upon him) did not recognize Muawiya as the “Commander of the Faithful” and required him to govern according to the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family). The truce was intended to preserve Islam, ensure social stability, and prevent further bloodshed.
Despite initially accepting the terms, Muawiya later violated the agreement, disregarding its provisions.
This historic truce exemplifies the wisdom, patience, and political foresight of Imam Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) in managing a national crisis and prioritizing the unity and safety of the Muslim community over continued conflict.
