EU sees 25% increase in first-time asylum applications

According to the monthly asylum data published by Eurostat today, a total of 83,385 first-time asylum applicants (non-EU citizens) applied for international protection in EU countries, indicating a 25% increase compared with June 2022.

The report also points out that the European Union also received 5,795 subsequent applicants, representing a 9% decrease compared with June 2022.

The largest group of asylum-seekers were from Syria and Afghanistan, with Germany, Spain, France and Italy receiving 75% of all first-time asylum applicants.
