United Nations: Human trafficking heinous violation of human rights, freedoms

On the occasion of the World Day against Human Trafficking, Antonio Guterres said in a statement that this phenomenon is a heinous violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

In a tweet on Sunday, July 30, Secretary General of the United Nations urged the countries of the world to take decisive steps to end human trafficking.

So far, the official statistics of trafficked people worldwide have not been published, but last year, the head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said that in the last 15 years, 60% of victims of trafficking were women.

This UN official had further noted that conflict and tension around the world is driving people to despair, with human traffickers taking advantage of the situation as an opportunity.

The Secretary General of the United Nations emphasizes the end of human trafficking in the world, while war, drought and environmental factors have caused most of the citizens of countries with weak economies to fall prey to human traffickers.

According to information from international organizations, from 2009 to 2021, human trafficking took about 450,000 victims, with at least 300,000 people found guilty in connection with this grave crime.
