The Pakistani army arrested Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, on Tuesday, May 9.
According to reports, his supporters took it to streets and demonstrated across Pakistan, which turned into violence, with angry protesters setting fire to dozens of government buildings and facilities.
Four people have died in Quetta and nearly fifty policemen and protesters have been injured, local reports mention.
According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, numerous people, particularly political leaders of this party, have been arrested in Pakistan.
Mobile phones’ access to the Internet has been cut off by order of the Ministry of Interior, and protest groups have gathered in front of army bases.
Rauf Hassan, Imran Khan’s spokesman, told the media that the situation is expected to worsen.
He added that the arrest may throw the country into disorder and chaos, accelerating the existing economic and political crisis.
However, Western countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have demanded the observance of the law in Pakistan.
Since the removal of Imran Khan from power, dozens of court cases have been filed against him. Former attempts by the security forces to arrest him at his residence in Lahore had been foiled by his supporters.
