Over half of Syrian population now food insecure, new WFP report reveals

The World Food Programme (WFP) said in its report released on Tuesday that more than half of the Syrian population currently lives in hunger due to the 12-year long war and the recent earthquake that worsened the humanitarian circumstances.

The UN-affiliated organization confirmed in its report that nearly 12.1 million of the Syrian population is now food insecure and around three million others are feared to slide into hunger.

WFP also warned that malnutrition is on the rise as 28 percent of the children are malnourished according to new data.

WFP Country Director in Syria, Kenn Crossley, said that, “Bombardment, displacement, isolation, drought, economic meltdown, and now earthquakes of staggering proportions. Syrians are remarkably resilient but there’s only so much that people can take.”

It should be mentioned that the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has worsened the already deteriorating humanitarian situation, leaving half of the population in dire need aids.
