Syria: IS-planted land mine kills at least 6 civilians

A deadly land mine explosion in Syria killed at least six people Sunday, according to state media. According to news agencies, the explosion hit civilians who were foraging for truffles in the countryside.

The incident was blamed on a land mine planted by the Islamic State group in the eastern Deir El-Zour governorate – an area that used to be the militants’ stronghold.

A similar explosion caused by an anti-tank mine had killed 6 people in the area searching for truffles, News agency SANA has reported.

In February, IS sleeper cells attacked workers collecting truffles near the central town of Sukhna, killing at least 53 people, mostly workers but also some Syrian government security forces.
