The United Nations confirms the continuation of discrimination against Shias in Bahrain
A United Nations committee criticized the Bahraini government’s discrimination against Shias in education, work, and the exercise of their cultural rights.
During a periodic review, the UN Committee on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights asserted that the government limits Shia access to a number of religious and cultural sites, in addition to harassing, intimidating, arresting, and detaining religious and cultural figures.
A detailed report issued by the commission indicated that human rights defenders suffered from harassment and intimidation.
The report pointed to the lack of independence of the National Human Rights Institution, and the lack of information regarding complaints submitted before, stressing the absence of legislation and a comprehensive political framework to combat discrimination against different groups such as people of determination.
