Members of the European Parliament sent an urgent message to the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, asking him to act quickly to expose the “blatant violations” of human rights in Bahrain.
European politicians raised a petition that witnessed an increasing signature by politicians in Brussels denouncing the repression practiced by the Bahraini regime against citizens and political activists, highlighting their suffering, particularly Dr. Abdul-Jalil Al-Singace and Hassan Mushaima.
The petition stated that the representatives are raising their letter due to an urgent matter related to the current human rights situation in Bahrain, which has deteriorated continuously since 2011.
Brussels politicians stressed that “since the brutal crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain in 2011, rights defenders and political activists as well as protesters and doctors have faced flagrant violations of their rights, been arbitrarily arrested and tortured in custody.”
European politicians stressed that the Bahraini government used brutal and cruel tactics to silence political opposition, and denounced what many prominent politicians are subjected to, and sentencing opponents to life imprisonment on the basis of forced confessions through the excessive use of violence and torture.
The representatives stressed that Al-Singace and Mushaima are only two prominent cases among the many, of Bahraini opposition politicians and human rights defenders, who are still illegally imprisoned and subjected to torture and ill-treatment on a daily basis.
The representatives called on the European Union to condemn Bahrain’s continued practices and flagrant violations of human rights, and impunity.
