India: The rise of religious extremism against Shias by the Wahhabi movement

There has been much talk about extremism and the sharp rise of Wahhabism in India in recent years, with the aim of destabilizing the country’s Shias by launching terrorist attacks.
One India newspaper reported yesterday, that India is witnessing a frightening rise of terrorism backed by Salafi Wahhabism, while noting the occurrence of a series of terrorist attacks carried out by the Wahhabis in the country with the aim of eliminating adherents of the Shia sect.
The newspaper pointed out that “In 2015, violence erupted near a mosque in the Bumanhali district, where Salafi and Wahhabi youth tried to impose the Wahhabi doctrine on worshipers, which caused clashes in which 4 people were seriously injured.”
The second incident mentioned by the newspaper is what happened in the state of Maharashtra, when the Wahhabis took over the administration of the state mosque, despite the people’s opposition.
“The success achieved by the Wahhabi movement in supporting terrorists was the highest in Kerala, and this can be known from recent WikiLeaks documents, which indicated that the Salafi movement is concerned about the increasing influence of Shias in India, and the Muslim World League has demanded the establishment of Wahhabi centers in India to confront the threat of Shiism.”
